IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 12 Districts in Kerala Amid Heatwave Conditions
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in Kerala, warning of rising temperatures and humid conditions that could persist until Friday.
According to the weather agency, several parts of the state are likely to experience temperatures 3–4 degrees Celsius above normal, increasing the risk of heat-related discomfort, particularly in coastal and lowland regions.
Key Highlights
- Yellow alert issued for 12 districts across Kerala
- Temperatures expected to exceed seasonal averages by 3–4°C
- Palakkad may record highs of up to 40°C
- Thunderstorms with lightning likely in isolated areas until Saturday
Temperature Outlook Across Districts
The IMD has forecast the highest temperatures in Palakkad, where the mercury could reach 40°C. Kollam is expected to record around 39°C, while Kottayam may see highs near 38°C.
Other districts—including Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod—are likely to experience temperatures of around 37°C. In Thiruvananthapuram, temperatures may rise to about 36°C.
Official Advisory
The IMD has cautioned that the combination of high temperatures and humidity may lead to uncomfortable conditions and increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses.
Authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.
Context / Background
A yellow alert issued by the IMD indicates potentially uncomfortable weather conditions that may affect daily activities but are not expected to cause widespread disruption. Such alerts are common during Kerala’s pre-monsoon season, when temperatures rise before the onset of monsoon rains.
This phase typically brings a mix of high daytime heat and isolated evening showers, especially in tropical coastal regions.
Public Impact
The current conditions could affect daily routines, outdoor work, and public health, particularly in areas with high humidity. Farmers, construction workers, and others engaged in outdoor occupations may face increased exposure to heat stress.
In addition, the IMD has forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across parts of the state until Saturday, with rainfall expected mainly during evening hours.
Safety Measures and Risks
The weather department has warned that lightning poses a serious risk during thunderstorms and urged residents to remain cautious during sudden weather changes. People are advised to seek shelter indoors during lightning activity and avoid open areas.
With temperatures expected to stay above normal in the coming days, authorities are urging residents to follow official advisories and monitor weather updates closely. The evolving weather pattern reflects the transition toward the monsoon season, with heat and intermittent rainfall likely to continue in the short term.Inputs & Images: Hindusthan Samachar
